Cloisonné and painted enamel mounted in gilt metal frame; framed: 50.7 x 50.7 cm (19 15/16 x 19 15/16 in.); diameter: 28.9 cm (11 3/8 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Mrs. Arthur F. Connard in memory of Jacob B. Perkins and Family 1985.69 After Japan was opened to the West in the 1860s, Western craftsmen exposed to these new artistic sensibilities popularized the delicate natural and floral motifs that were characteristic of Japanese design.
