Container for Flowers, 1983. Kohyama Yasuhisa (Japanese, b. 1936). Stoneware; overall: 21.7 x 20 cm (8 9/16 x 7 7/8 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Louis D. Kacalieff, M.D. Fund 1984.9 This flattened hexagonal flower vase showcases the brilliant coloration that can be achieved through wood firing: scorching produced the flash of orange on the surface. Although this piece is a traditional form for holding flowers, Kohyama has also produced more sculptural works that are intended for the same purpose.
