Roundel from a Tunic with Palmette Tree, 700s–800s. Egypt or Syria, 8th-9th century. Silk; complementary weft-faced twill weave with inner warps (samite); overall: 18.1 x 18.4 cm (7 1/8 x 7 1/4 in.); mounted: 27.9 x 26.7 cm (11 x 10 1/2 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Purchase from the J. H. Wade Fund 1982.296 Originally designed in Byzantine Egypt or possibly Syria, patterns like this were woven throughout a period of two to four centuries.
