Venus and a Satyr , c. 1700. Ignaz Elhafen (German, 1658–1715). Ivory; overall: 15.5 x 12.4 x 3 cm (6 1/8 x 4 7/8 x 1 3/16 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Andrew R. and Martha Holden Jennings Fund 1982.144 Elhafen depicted mythological scenes in many small ivory reliefs intended for domestic decoration. As with any work in ivory, the size of the tusk dictated this relief’s scale.
