Memorial Portrait of Matsumoto Kōshirō V, Age 75, c. 1838. Utagawa Kunihide (Japanese, active 1820s-1850s). Color woodblock print; sheet: 37.5 x 26.1 cm (14 3/4 x 10 1/4 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Claude Cassirer 1977.68 This kabuki actor was known for playing bad guys. His fans would have collected this portrait as a memento following his death in May 1838.
