The Imperial Eagle, c. AD 1–25. Italy, Rome, probably Augustan, early 1st Century. Cornelian intaglio; diameter: 3.5 cm (1 3/8 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Purchase from the J. H. Wade Fund 1977.13 This eagle holds a thunderbolt in its claws, alluding to Jupiter, the supreme Roman deity.
