Dragon, 1700s or later. Italy, 18th century or later. Bronze; overall: 17 x 28.3 x 18 cm (6 11/16 x 11 1/8 x 7 1/16 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Michael de Havenon 1973.226 This figure was probably originally meant to serve as the decorative foundation to a larger object such as a casket or urn. In transition from decorative motif to independent work of art, the nether half may have been an addition, evidenced by the seam along its torso.
