Carved Lacquer Scroll Box, 1736–95. China, Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Qianlong reign (1736-95). Cinnabar carved lacquer on wood; overall: 14 x 14.7 cm (5 1/2 x 5 13/16 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, John L. Severance Fund 1969.32 This is the original box for the handscroll Portraits of the Qianlong Emperor and His Twelve Consorts, CMA 1969.31

- Inscription: 心寫治平 Translation: In his heart is envisioned a peaceful reign. Remark: An alternate translation is "Mind Picture of a Well-Governed and Tranquil Reign." The inscription on the lacquer box lid expresses the Qianlong Emperor's ambition for his reign.
