Plate with Bird and Flower, late 1600s. Japan, Edo period (1615-1868). Porcelain with overglaze enamel (Hizen ware, Ko-Kutani style); diameter: 37.5 cm (14 3/4 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Mrs. Terrence O. Kennedy in memory of her husband, Terrence O. Kennedy 1969.253 Porcelain must be fired at a high temperature to achieve its strength and semitranslucent surface.
