(From) A Paris Window, 1922. Christopher Nevinson (British, 1889–1946). Etching and drypoint; sheet: 31.2 x 22.6 cm (12 5/16 x 8 7/8 in.); platemark: 20 x 14.9 cm (7 7/8 x 5 7/8 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Mrs. Malcolm L. McBride 1966.76 This print, which offers a view from an interior space through a distinctively Parisian window and terrace, relates to a painting created by Christopher Nevinson in the previous year. Both date from a period during which the artist became interested in depicting the alienation of urban life. Here, the viewer is placed within a shadowy apartment to suggest isolation. A view through the window reveals a woman in an adjacent apartment combing her hair while unaware that she is being watched, emphasizing the separation of lives otherwise lived closely. This print was published by the Leicester Galleries, who frequently exhibited Christopher Nevinson's work.
