Deep Bowl with Dragons, 1700s. Japan, Edo period (1615-1868). Porcelain with overglaze color enamel and molding (Hizen ware, Kakiemon type); diameter: 20.6 cm (8 1/8 in.); overall: 8 cm (3 1/8 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Severance and Greta Millikin Collection 1964.248 Graced with energetic dragons amid clouds, this deep bowl has a petal-shaped rim. The coiled position of the dragon in the center and the chasing action of those on the sides contribute to a sense of circular motion. The exterior shows a running figure and two birds in flight, echoing the movement in the interior.
