Ceramic Form, 1959. Claude Conover (American, 1907–1994). Stoneware; overall: 45.8 x 14.6 cm (18 1/16 x 5 3/4 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Silver Jubilee Treasure Fund 1959.148 Claude Conover, one of Cleveland’s most prolific and masterful ceramic artists of the 20th century, often created large, minimalist vessels that exploited the natural colors and strength of clay. Although well-known for his vase forms, this work in the form of a pitcher is more unusual, a form Conover rarely explored.
