Lion, AD 100s-200s. Northern India, Uttar Pradesh, Mathura, Kushan period (c. 80-320). Sandstone; overall: 47 cm (18 1/2 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Edward L. Whittemore Fund 1952.514 Roaring lions such as this have been found on the throne of Kushan kings. Early sculptures of the Buddha also show him seated on a lion throne, and the roar of his teachings (dharma) extends throughout the world.
