Bird-Man Pendant, c. 700–1550. Western Panama, or Diquís, Costa Rica, Veraguas-Gran Chiriquí or Diquís Style, 8th-16th Century. Cast and hammered gold; overall: 7.6 x 6.7 x 2 cm (3 x 2 5/8 x 13/16 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Mrs. R. Henry Norweb in memory of Roberta Holden Bole 1949.557 In the Panama-Costa Rica region, gold ornaments were associated with political and religious authority.
