- Inscription: With the stomping figures and gathering of drinking, smoking, and canoodling revelers, Ostade captured the raw spirit of tavern music and the earthy vitality of peasant songs. The tree visible behind the fiddler suggests that this may be a May Day celebration, whose festivities heralded the arrival of spring.
