Mount Haruna in Kozuke Province, c. 1830s. Kikukawa Eizan (Japanese, 1787–1867). Color woodblock print; sheet: 26.1 x 37.8 cm (10 1/4 x 14 7/8 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Mrs. Ralph King 1943.35 This print is the right-hand sheet from a triptych depicting a famous Buddhist pilgrimage site in what is now Gunma prefecture. The women in the foreground observe men undergoing ritual purification by standing under a sacred waterfall. The full composition showed eight women and a child traversing a bridge before a panorama of the religious site. The Buddhist sculptures in the upper left corner of this print represent Fudo Myoo flanked by two child deities called Seitaka and Kongara.
