Greek and Roman Art
Bracelet, AD 350–500. Syria, Roman, late Roman period, mid 4th-5th Century. Glass; diameter: 7.6 cm (3 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Mrs. Malcolm L. McBride 1930.701 Jewelry made entirely of glass, such as this bracelet, held wide appeal in Roman society because of its potential to imitate more precious materials. The adaptability of glass offered an affordable alternative to the expensive items favored by the aristocracy, enabling less affluent Romans to follow imperial tastes.
