Harkness Endowment Fund 1925.468 Roman portraiture styles evolved in response to the artistic tastes of emperors. Imperial dynasties adopted the visual styles and characteristics of predecessors with whom they wanted to align themselves. This idealized portrait of Trajan emphasizes symbolic connections with Augustus, perhaps the most revered of all the emperors.
