Fragment of a Band with Abstract Pattern, 1500s-1600s. Italy, 16th-17th century. Needle lace, filet/lacis (knotted ground and darned in one and two directions); unbleached and bleached linen (est.); overall: 6.4 x 26.4 cm (2 1/2 x 10 3/8 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of J. H. Wade 1920.1127 The darker ground of unbleached linen allows the meandering pattern completed in the filet/lacis technique using bleached linen to prominently stand out. This piece has a counterpart at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (20.186.29).
