Sargent, John Singer. In the Simplon Pass, 1909. Translucent watercolor and touches of opaque watercolor and wax resist with graphite underdrawing, sheet: 14 7/16 x 21 3/16 in. (36.7 x 53.8 cm)
frame: 27 7/8 x 35 3/4 x 1 3/8 in. (70.8 x 90.8 x 3.5 cm). Gift of The Roebling Society, 68.186. No known copyright restrictions.
In the Simplon Pass is a later addition to Brooklyn’s collection. Portions of this watercolor, particularly the face and parasol shaft, are unfinished. Though Sargent at times left faces blank, an infrared image of the underdrawing reveals facial features (see image below), as well as details in the parasol.
