In the Simplon Pass
1909
John Singer Sargent
American, born Italy, 1856-1925
American Art
In the Simplon Pass is a later addition to Brooklyn’s collection. Portions of this watercolor, particularly the face and parasol shaft, are unfinished. Though Sargent at times left faces blank, an infrared image of the underdrawing reveals facial features (see image below), as well as details in the parasol.
