Gauguin, Paul. Change of Residence (Changement de Residence), 1899. Woodcut on Eastern laid paper adhered overall to wove paper, Image: 6 9/16 x 12 1/8 in. (16.7 x 30.8 cm)
Sheet: 6 9/16 x 12 1/8 in. (16.7 x 30.8 cm). By exchange, 37.152. No known copyright restrictions.
Paul Gauguin based this composition on details of a sculptural relief from the eighth– to ninth-century temple complex of Borobudur, in central Java, Indonesia, which he knew from a photograph in his possession. The hands of the three Tahitian women on the left form the mudra position namaskara, a gesture of greeting and adoration, in imitation of three Buddhist monks in the relief.
