Vollon, Antoine. Fish, 1871-1875. Oil on canvas, 12 7/8 x 18 3/8 in. (32.7 x 46.7 cm)
frame: 23 5/8 × 29 3/8 × 4 1/4 in. (60 × 74.6 × 10.8 cm). Gift of William A. Putnam and Walter H. Crittenden, 19.86. No known copyright restrictions.
Antoine Vollon depicted this mound of freshly caught fish in a dynamic manner that merges his subject with the substance and movement of paint itself. Slippery fish are evoked in long brushstrokes and touches of color, while a wicker basket and bed of reeds are partially conjured through marks that appear to have been scratched into the still-wet paint with the brush handle.
