Scarab of Thutmose II
ca. 1481-1479 B.C.E.
Maker Unknown
Egyptian, Classical, Ancient Near Eastern Art
Because Thutmose II ruled for only three years, objects from his reign are extremely rare. On the underside of this superbly carved scarab, two vultures flank an inscribed oval frame—known as a cartouche—containing the name the king took at his coronation.
