Humidor | musefully
Kimbel and Cabus. Humidor, ca. 1875. American black walnut, brass-plated nickel, 8 1/8 × 18 × 10 1/4 in. (20.6 × 45.7 × 26 cm). Purchase gift of Deedee and Barrie Wigmore, 2017.7. Creative Commons-BY.
This casket-form humidor, a humidity-controlled container for cigars, would have been a fashionable and thoroughly Modern Gothic accessory in a customer’s dining room or library. The metal mounts conform precisely to the object and emphasize its structure, and may have been custom fabricated by one of the various hardware retailers that Kimbel and Cabus regularly patronized for the metal elements used on their furniture forms.
