Sake Cup
1990
Shigemasa Higashida
Japanese, born 1955
Asian Art
Shigemasa Higashida uses the copper-green glaze associated with Oribe wares, but he departs from tradition by covering the entire piece with a thick coating of the glaze and introducing other materials to create swirls of blue. With its rugged outcropping and blue pooling, this tiny cup takes on the quality of a landscape.
