Large Circular Tray with Design of Two Birds, 16th century. Wood, black lacquer, 2 3/4 x 17 1/2 in. (7 x 44.5 cm). Gift of Mrs. Nathan L. Burnett, 1991.177. Creative Commons-BY.
This black lacquer tray, rare because of its color, is decorated with two phoenixes (fenghuang) circling each other against a dense field of peonies; together these images form a rebus, meaning, “May there be wealth, rank, and good fortune” (fugui jixiang).
