Egyptian, Classical, Ancient Near Eastern Art
The Book of the Dead provided the spells the deceased must know and recite to speed the journey into the afterlife. This copy was made for a highly placed priest of the god Amun. As with most other examples of The Book of the Dead, only a selection of spells is included here. On the left are Spells 15 and 17. The illustration depicts Djedkhonsuiuefankh before the sun god Re-Hor-akhty. The columns of text in the illustration reveal the god’s greeting to the deceased and the deceased’s name and genealogy.
