Landscape with Travellers on Bridge
ca. 1730-1735
Okumura Masanobu
Japanese, 1686-1764
Asian Art
This early woodblock print was printed in black, with color and metallic highlights added by hand. It is from an Eight Views series depicting sites in Japan’s Shiga Prefecture—formerly known as Omi—just east of Kyoto. This composition locates the “fishing village at sunset” motif in the town of Seta, which was famous for its very long bridge. The image is far quieter and more poetic than most prints designed by Okumura Masanobu, who was better known for his satirical depictions of urban life.
