Contemporary Art
This print is from a series by George Segal featuring male and female figures wearing blue jeans, often with T-shirts rendered in bright pops of color. Their bodies are seen close up and cropped, and appear as if pressed against the picture’s surface: torsos and hips emerge from the inky black background. Here, the artist focused on a woman’s blue-jean-clad bottom, with both soft ground etching and aquatint used to describe her sensual form. Though Segal is associated with Pop art, his works have a mysterious psychological quality that distinguishes him from others in the movement.
